Happiness is Singular

I have found out that no one or nothing can make another person happy. People make themselves happy. Others lessen or intensify the way a person already feels. If you are lucky, you will encounter a person that reminds you of the good things that are inside of you. Just don't fall intro the trap of believing that you are responsible for someone else's happiness. Some people are just content with a life of misery and or confusion. If you have met someone or are involved with someone, a fundamental truth that you must embrace is that you cannot control their happiness. This may sound like old news but it all depends on the context in which you look at it. If you have ever told yourself a phrase that sounds like this, "Maybe he/she will be happy if I....."; then you should re-read the first line. To quote NFL coach Dennis Green, most people "are who we thought they were", personality-wise. A miserable person is just that; as miserable person. The reasons why they are miserable, or whether or not they even know they are miserable is a completely different post. All you can do productively in the lives of someone like that is to make their lives less miserable. You can't remove the misery. You can just lessen it. If you're in this position, I hope that's enough for you. It wouldn't be for me. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?

Clinton Conspiracy

I'm as big of a Conspiracy Theory fan as the next guy, but when I received this e-mail, I thought that there is no way that this could be true and not talked about during an year where Hillary Clinton is running. If it's true, it is really creepy. If it's not true. Let’s pretend it is and see how creeped out we can get. If anyone wants to check it out and post their findings, that's cool too. I like conspiracy theories but not enough to spend time researching their validity. It keeps life mysterious and interesting. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?

AFC, huh?

As you all probably know, I am a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. As you also may have noticed, I have been particularly quiet since making my prediction of a Dallas vs. San Diego Super Bowl. After treatment and meds for depression, I have decided to break my self imposed football silence. I would love to talk about the AFC's "so-called" dominance of the NFL. The AFC has been pretty good over the last few years but their reign is coming to an end. My only real beef wit the AFC is that they house the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they act as if they are so much better than the NFC (which houses the Cowboys). They were talking like the NFC was the JVs. Now all that talk should be ended. With Super Bowl XLII, we saw the third best team in the "weaker" division, man-handle the best team in the AFC. A team that some were calling "the best team ever assembled", with "the greatest quarterback to ever play the position". I'm just glad that the shift of power is beginning, because the NFC needs to get a few more rings, now that having 5 isn't so special anymore. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?

Uncle Murda

I have to write about another phenomenon in Hip-Hop that has me a bit unnerved. There is a new up and coming rapper that is forcing rap music to take a few steps back. His name is Uncle Murda. He is signed to Def Jam and is linked to the Roca-fella family. My problems with the MC are obvious.
1.) His name is Uncle Murda and he is one of those MCs who pride themselves on being, and keeping it, real. He was a well know and documented trigger man/ stick-up kid before picking up the mic. Of the few tracks and mixtapes that I have heard from him, he doesn't shy away from the topic of killing and often says how willing he is to do it.

2.) He is always talking about how he "really did shoot niggas" or how he'll "kill a muthafucka like it is nothing".

3.) He recently got shot in his head and lived. I have no problem with that. Afterwards he released a track entitled, "Hard To Kill" ,where he talks about how he got shot in the head. There was no regret or talk of being on the wrong path or anything to sway a person from going that route. In fact, he says the phrase, "I got shot in the head" at least 10 times. Sounds a little glamorization to me.

He is an amazingly talented MC but I'm not sure if this is the path NWA, Ice Cube, or Ice T expected gangsta to head in. Maybe I'm just an old guy venting about young cats, or maybe I'm just too far detached from the streets; but this doesn't sit right with me. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?

The Five Precepts

You all know how I feel about religion, but I saw this and thought that it was really cool. This could be a wonderful replacement or fill-in for those who can't quite stomach the Ten Commandments. These are connected to the Buddhist religion.

The Five Precepts

1. Abstain from taking life.

2. Abstain from taking that which is not given.

3. Abstain from misconduct done in lust.

4. Abstain from lying.

5. Abstain from all forms of intoxication.

I like them. It seems as though, these can be used to build a firm foundation of life. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?

The Artist formerly known as......

I have been getting a little down about my current work situation and it has had me in a little of a stagnant funk. As I was trying to get myself out of it, I learned another way to positively manipulate myself and the situation. When I think of, myself, my job, and the work I do; I refer to it as the Art. When someone asks me what I do, I respond that I practice the Art of Counseling or teach the Art of Productive Communication. I also explain that I am trying to learn to master the Art. It helps. The conversation that it strikes up is usually very interesting. Instead of instantly getting their personal editorial on whether or not counseling works, or if it ever has helped anyone; you engage people to find out what that Artistic side of it is and how you do it. This will not only work for me or my profession, I believe it will work for several others also. So, here is my assignment: what ever your job, career, or profession is; find a way to work Art into the description. If you are a janitor, you practice/master the Art of Structural Hygiene. If you are a police officer, you practice/master the Art of Protective Service. If you are a cashier, you practice/master the Art of Treasury Management. I only suggest do this if you need a little self esteem jump start, or you are struggling with a job that you love. It helps when you are in a rut. This doesn't work well if your job directly and/or purposefully hurts others, though.

There is a certain luxury and unspoken individualism granted to Artists and I think it is time to extend that courtesy to any and all. I guarantee that there are some of you who are reading this right now and are thinking of how ridiculous this seems. You have made a different choice. You do not choose to be Artists. Instead you have chosen to be Critics. I guess wherever there is Art there will be Criticism of that Art. If you have chosen to be a Critic, I hope it was an educated and well thought out choice. If you have chosen to be an Artist, remember that the great Artists never really listened to Critics anyway. But that's just my opinion though, and who the hell am I?
